Modifying Cars: Enhancing Your Car’s Appearance and Performance

Car modifications are done either to enhance its appearance or to increase its performance or for both reasons. The wide availability of car parts allow for more imaginative designs and performance additions and many car owners find such modifications a welcome addition to their vehicles. Modifying cars is not exclusive to the United States. It is done all over the world, the final outcome depending on the availability of the needed spare parts on the locality. Even on the internet, there are sites that specialize on the subject with modification advice being given by car experts all over the world.

Car engines are frequently the subject for modification. The aspects that are often desired are speed and power increases. A specific engine is built for a specific car chassis. The alteration happens when the owner become bored or discouraged with its performance. Increasing its speed requires some strenghthening of the engine and increase of the cylinder capacity with a larger piston and a rebore of the engine cylinders is required. It can be quite expensive especially if it is customized, but modifying cars can be an attractive option and the money involved becomes a lesser consideration. A car will not handle well if it is only the engine that is modified. Its supporting systems such as steering and brakes have to be modified too. More engine power means it requires more brake application to stop it. This also goes for the steering. Handling problems are usually remedied by changing the wheels and tires with performance models that can handle tight turns even at high speeds. Increasing engine power also requires pretty much the same alterations.

The appearance of a car can also be the subject for modifying cars. Short of changing the car body completely, a variety of car body accessories can completely transform the appearance of a vehicle. Various countries have their own concepts of what a beautiful car is, so variously designed cars are available worldwide.

However modifying cars can be a safety hazard especially if it is a small car with a small engine. For example, removing the airbags and altering the car clearance can seriously injure the driver and his passengers in case of a car crash. The suspension system will also be subjected to too much stress if you lower your car below its prescribed limits. Making it ride higher on the other hand will cause it to ride over smaller cars in a collision. It also makes the vehicle more susceptible to rollovers in a side collision or tight turns.

Grill guards and other accessories that are installed on the front of many vehicles especially trucks can hinder the performance of the airbag sensors, which are located on the front bumpers. In an accident, it can cause the airbags to misfire causing serious injuries. Modifying cars should not only be done for appearance and power but should also include safety considerations as well. Cars are made with the safety of its riders in mind so altering its specifications will have serious consequences in case an accident occurs.
