What is the most favoured dish in the whole world? If this question were to be asked in any part of the world, there would be no doubt in what the answer would be. Of course, Ice creams! If any food has been so loved across regions, religions and cultures, it is ice cream. This creamy cold mixture has caught the attention of human taste buds since the time it was discovered. Not many people realize that it is not as modern as they think. Ice cream recipes have been around since the time of the Romans. In fact, the first ice cream was reportedly made in China for the emperor. But then when it comes to ice cream, people are blind to everything but the taste.
Beginning in the 18th century, the European aristocrats took to this dainty sweet dish. Everyone tried their own versions of the ice cream recipe. The Chinese Emperor was known to have had his servants bring in snow from the mountains to be served with fruits. Thus, began the tradition of chilled desserts. Emperor Nero was among the Romans who loved their ice creams. These were followed by the caliphs of Persia. The Persians developed a technique for storing ice in naturally cooled refrigerators to help make these dishes. It took Marco Polo to bring this novel and till then, eastern delicacy to Europe. It was so liked by the people that since then; the number of ice cream recipes have grown too large to be even counted.
The number of ice cream recipes has grown from the first one published in the 18th century. Today, the US alone, consumes in a day about 13 liters of ice cream per person!! That is a sign of the popularity and favour that ice creams receive among the people. Of course, the degree of technology into making an ice-cream has also improved considerably. The first ice cream makers were invented in the 1900s to help the easy making of home made ice creams. By the late 1950s, almost every home in America had ice cream maker recipes of its own. In fact, most of the major ice cream giants like Ben and Jerry’s, Carvel and Dairy Queen began as household recipes before becoming international icons.
Ice creams are no longer the simple summer treat that they used to be. With variations from sundaes, to sorbets and gelatos, Ice cream recipes have adapted themselves to the taste buds of every human being. But nothing beats that homemade ice cream. A taste of that creamy cold sweet dish made with the love and affection of mothers who wanted their tiny tots to have something sweet is something else. If one were asked of their favorite ice cream moment, each would have a different version. No wonder then that every home has its own traditional recipe that is kept as a secret to be revealed only on special occasions. Too much for a sweet dish? Well, it is not just any sweet. It is Ice cream!
